Korean Pronunciation Lesson 2: Vowels and Diphthongs215

In Korean, vowels are pronounced clearly and distinctly. There are ten basic vowels: ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ, ㅣ. Each vowel has a long and a short form, and the length of the vowel affects the meaning of the word. In addition to the basic vowels, there are also diphthongs, which are combinations of two vowels pronounced as a single syllable. The most common diphthongs are ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅖ, ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅟ.

Vowels

The following table shows the Korean vowels and their corresponding IPA symbols:| Vowel | IPA Symbol |
|---|---|
| ㅏ | a |
| ㅑ | ja |
| ㅓ | ə |
| ㅕ | jə |
| ㅗ | o |
| ㅛ | jo |
| ㅜ | u |
| ㅠ | ju |
| ㅡ | ɯ |
| ㅣ | i |

The vowels ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ are pronounced with a clear, open mouth. The vowels ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ are pronounced with a more narrow, rounded mouth. The vowel ㅡ is pronounced with a neutral mouth position. The vowel ㅣ is pronounced with a high, front tongue position.

Diphthongs

The following table shows the Korean diphthongs and their corresponding IPA symbols:| Diphthong | IPA Symbol |
|---|---|
| ㅐ | ae |
| ㅒ | jә |
| ㅔ | e |
| ㅖ | je |
| ㅘ | wa |
| ㅙ | wә |
| ㅚ | ø |
| ㅝ | wo |
| ㅞ | wə |
| ㅟ | wi |

Diphthongs are pronounced by combining the sounds of two vowels into a single syllable. The first vowel is pronounced with a greater emphasis than the second vowel. The most common diphthongs are ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅖ, ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅟ.
