Greetings

The most common way to greet someone in Japanese is to say "こんにちは" (konnichiwa). This can be used in both formal and informal settings. Other common greetings include:
"おはようございます" (ohayo gozaimasu): Good morning
"こんばんは" (konbanwa): Good evening
"おやすみなさい" (oyasuminasai): Good night

When greeting someone, it is also common to bow. The deeper the bow, the more respect you are showing.

Introductions

To introduce yourself in Japanese, you can say "はじめまして" (hajimemashite). This means "Nice to meet you." You can then follow up with your name and where you are from.

For example:

"はじめまして。私はジョンです。アメリカからです。" (Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Jon desu. Amerika kara desu.)

Nice to meet you. I am John. I am from America.

You can also use the following phrases to introduce others:
"こちらは..." (kochira wa...): This is...
"...さんをご紹介します。" (...san o goshos kai shimasu.): I would like to introduce...

For example:

"こちらは私の友達のジョンです。" (Kochira wa watashi no tomodachi no Jon desu.)

This is my friend John.

Numbers

The Japanese counting system is based on the decimal system. The numbers 1-10 are as follows:
1 - いち (ichi)
2 - に (ni)
3 - さん (san)
4 - よん (yon)
5 - ご (go)
6 - ろく (roku)
7 - なな (nana)
8 - はち (hachi)
9 - きゅう (kyu)
10 - じゅう (ju)

To count larger numbers, simply combine the individual numbers. For example, 20 is "にじゅう" (niju) and 100 is "ひゃく" (hyaku).

Days of the week

The days of the week in Japanese are as follows:
Monday - げつようび (getsuyobi)
Tuesday - かようび (kayobi)
Wednesday - すいようび (suiyoubi)
Thursday -もくようび (mokuyobi)
Friday - きんようび (kinyobi)
Saturday - どようび (doyobi)
Sunday - にちようび (nichiyobi)

To say "on Monday," you would say "げつようびに" (getsuyobini).

Months of the year

The months of the year in Japanese are as follows:
January - いちがつ (ichigatsu)
February - にがつ (nigatsu)
March - さんがつ (sangatsu)
April - しがつ (shigatsu)
May - ごがつ (gogatsu)
June - ろくがつ (rokugatsu)
July - しちがつ (shichigatsu)
August - はちがつ (hachigatsu)
September - くがつ (kugatsu)
October - じゅうがつ (jugatsu)
November - じゅういちがつ (juichigatsu)
December - じゅうнигаつ (junigatsu)

To say "in January," you would say "いちがつに" (ichigatsuni).

School subjects

The most common school subjects in Japan are as follows:
Japanese - 国語 (kokugo)
Math - 数学 (sugaku)
Science - 理科 (rika)
Social studies - 社会 (shakai)
English - 英語 (eigo)
Physical education - 体育 (taiiku)
Music - 音楽 (ongaku)
Art - 美術 (bijutsu)

To say "I am taking Japanese," you would say "私は日本語を勉強しています。" (Watashi wa nihongo o benkyo shite imasu.)
