Kana Soup: Three Words for Each Japanese Vowel Sound380
Japanese, like many other languages, has a unique set of characters used to represent its sounds. These characters, known as kana, are divided into two types: hiragana and katakana. Hiragana is used for native Japanese words, while katakana is used for foreign words and onomatopoeia. Both hiragana and katakana have 46 basic characters, each representing a different sound.
In this article, we will take a closer look at each of the Japanese vowel sounds and provide three example words for each sound. We will start with the five basic vowel sounds: a, i, u, e, and o.

Finally, Japanese also has a long vowel sound, which is indicated by a macron (¯) over the vowel. Long vowel sounds are pronounced for twice as long as short vowel sounds. Here are three example words for each long vowel sound:
