So, what's the difference between a good ESL teacher and a great ESL teacher?

Here are 10 qualities that I believe all great ESL teachers share:
They are passionate about teaching. Great ESL teachers love teaching and helping their students learn. They are enthusiastic and engaging, and they make learning fun.
They are patient. Great ESL teachers understand that learning a new language takes time and effort. They are patient with their students and they provide them with the support they need to succeed.
They are knowledgeable. Great ESL teachers have a deep understanding of the English language and they are able to explain it in a clear and concise way. They are also familiar with the different learning styles of their students and they can adapt their teaching methods to meet their needs.
They are creative. Great ESL teachers are always looking for new and innovative ways to teach their students. They use a variety of teaching methods and materials, and they are not afraid to experiment.
They are organized. Great ESL teachers are organized and efficient. They plan their lessons carefully and they make sure that their students have all the materials they need.
They are professional. Great ESL teachers are professional and respectful. They dress appropriately, they arrive on time for their classes, and they treat their students with respect.
They are supportive. Great ESL teachers are supportive of their students. They encourage them to learn and they help them to overcome their challenges.
They are flexible. Great ESL teachers are flexible and adaptable. They are able to adjust their teaching methods to meet the needs of their students and they are willing to try new things.
They are reflective. Great ESL teachers are reflective and they are always looking for ways to improve their teaching. They ask for feedback from their students and they are willing to make changes to their teaching methods based on that feedback.
They are lifelong learners. Great ESL teachers are lifelong learners. They are always looking for new ways to learn about the English language and they are always trying to improve their teaching skills.

If you are looking for a great ESL teacher, look for someone who has these qualities. You will be glad you did.
