Scene 1:
A classroom. A group of students are sitting at their desks, looking bored. The teacher, Mr. Smith, enters the room.Mr. Smith: Good morning, class. Today, we're going to be learning about the past perfect tense.
The students groan.
Mr. Smith: I know, I know. It's not the most exciting topic, but it's important. The past perfect tense is used to talk about actions that happened before another past action.
The students continue to look bored.
Mr. Smith: Okay, let's try an example. If I say, "I had eaten dinner before I went to the movie," what does that mean?
The students stare at him blankly.
Mr. Smith: It means that I ate dinner before I went to the movie. The action of eating dinner happened before the action of going to the movie.
The students still don't seem to understand.
Mr. Smith: Okay, let's try another example. If I say, "I had studied for the test before I took it," what does that mean?
The students still don't seem to understand.
Mr. Smith: Okay, I give up. Let's just move on.

Mr. Smith: Okay, Sarah. What had you done before you came to class today?
Sarah: I had eaten breakfast.
Mr. Smith: Good. David, what had you done before you went to bed last night?
David: I had brushed my teeth.
Mr. Smith: Excellent. Emily, what had you done before you started this exercise?
Emily: I had listened to the instructions.
Mr. Smith: Very good.
